The Ambramovic Chelsea takeover was salt in a raw wound.

We were financially crippled and most clubs knew it, the measly £3.4m we got for Carrick was the exact figure we had to pay Barclays to avoid administration 48 hours later

Re: Glenn Johnson retires.
We sold Cole, Defoe, Carrick and Johnson for a grand total of only just more than 20 million. Any one of them at that point in their career would be worth at least twice that in today's market.

Don’t think I’ve ever been that disillusioned about West Ham than that 2003 Summer transfer window. Not just selling our top young players but getting poor fees for them as well. Joe Cole to Chelsea for £6m, joke.

Re: Glenn Johnson retires.
Of the 'golden generation' it felt like he probably had the least successful career (I'm guessing he actually won more trophies than Defoe), even though he seemed to make the biggest initial impression when he played in claret and blue. Although that might have been partly due to how bad our defence was before him and Brevett came in.

Only Defoe left of them playing down. I might actually shed a tear when he goes.

For me it is still one of the saddest sales of a west ham player. He was a really exciting player starting in the 1st team and before he had a real chance we sold him.

Sven, you are right. Glen's shitty excuse ( he was with Ben May of Millwall)

"Ben was doing up his bathroom so we went to B&Q and found one of those sets where you get everything in one box. But he wanted a seat with a slow-close lid, so we took out the seat and put in another one.

"What we didn't know was that the new seat was £2.35 more expensive. We went through the till, paid for it and then the security guard stopped us and said he had been watching on CCTV. We just burst out laughing. Where's Jeremy Beadle then?

"But he said, 'No, this is serious, the police are on their way.' The police turned up and they were laughing. I said to the security guard, 'Can we not just pay the £2.35?'" He said, 'No, this is a serious offence.' So the police gave us two options: go to court and fight it out, or pay an on-the-spot fine. We couldn't be bothered going to court so we paid the fine but doing that made us look guilty".

He did score a goal of the season contender for the scousers at the old place too...didn't celebrate it though so - good lad

Re: Glenn Johnson retires.
I understood he and/or his mate didn’t steal a toilet seat
They switched the price tag from a cheaper one onto a luxury one befitting the arse of an England international.
It was more fraud than theft

True, the money we got for him was good. Couldn't refuse such a high bidet?

Re: Glenn Johnson retires.
Glen Johnson was excellent when he broke into our first team.

Not sure why he didn't make it as one of the greatest full-backs of his generation - maybe if he'd been born a few years later he'd have been nurtured a bit more as one of these marauding wing-backs turning out for the top clubs.

I guess he never had the defensive nous and his attacking lacked finesse. As others have said, he plateaued - albeit at a high level.

Always seemed a good lad and his sale value at the time helped save the club.

Re: Glenn Johnson retires.
A bloke I worked with at the time played 5-a-side with Glen Johnson (in secret as clubs don't let players do that). According to him Johnson burst into tears when he found out West Ham were selling him and initially refused to go along with it. He was told that the club needed the cash to prevent them going into admin (and Chelsea famously paid the six million in one go).
The week he left someone went up to him and asked for an autograph. He signed it "Glen Johnson, West Ham - I'll be back"

I remember thinking when Glenn broke into the West Ham team that here was a future skipper. I've always thought he might return one day even two or three years ago, if only to hear West Ham fans joking about his toilet habits.

Hahaha at easthammer.

I was really pissed off when we sold him. I was just getting my bathroom done up.

No, he was really GOOD. Shame he went on to play for the world's 3 WORST clubs. And Portsmouth.

Cheers Glenn.

Re: Glenn Johnson retires.
Good player, he was great in the second half of the season when we got relegated with Glen Roedent...

If we had got Sir Les and Rufus Brevett in earlier we would have stayed up that year.

Met him at the recent England v Croatia game and came across decent enough. Going into property.

He was superb in that relegation season.

Yep, spot on: he said it involved some confusion over a bathroom set that his mate was trying to swap at the B&Q store.

But the press had a field day.

Re: Glenn Johnson retires.
I remember being at work and hearing on the radio that we sold him to Chelsea and I was more angry at his sale than most of the other " stars " that we sold off , just didn't see it coming for some reason , Christ knows why should have been used to it under that liar and money grabber Brown .
